eden21 works with organisations and businesses to develop circular economy solutions and deliver sustainable resource management. As a British Standard’s Committee member and one of its authors, eden21 played a pivotal role developing BS 8001 ‒ the world’s first circular economy standard. We have also advised the UK Prime Minister’s Strategy Unit (Cabinet Office), other UK government departments and public/private sector clients. eden21 is a founding member, North West England Sustainable Development Group and North West England Climate Fund (Scrutiny Chair). We played a formative role in Defra’s £30M New Technology Demonstrator Programme and have led many fact finding study tours across Europe/UK to evaluate environmental technologies for recycling and recovery.

Founder

Dr Stuart McLanaghan, Founder – Eden21 is a chartered business sustainability professional and entrepreneur, operating at a senior/executive-level across the food, environmental services and manufacturing sectors. Experienced at delivering board-level strategy development, as well as governance and advocacy work. Stuart is experienced in multi-stakeholder engagement and consensus building, as well as highly regarded for impartiality and integrity across government, regulators and private sector. He has a PhD in environmental management, Imperial College, London.

Stuart is also a BBC Food Hero, founding and operationally directed a multi-award winning ethical wild food business, developing ‘fells to plate’ traceability into Waitrose. Winning and successfully managing customer accounts with both Waitrose, Forestry Commission England.

Whilst Policy Director ‒ Environmental Services Association, he directed the modernisation of the national policy focus towards economic and environmental sustainability; widely seen externally/internally as a major success. During the foot-and-mouth outbreak Stuart worked closely with senior MoD and UK Government officials, developing national logistics procedures for the safe management of fallen animal stock.

What’s in a name?

eden21 was founded whilst based from Cumbria’s Eden Valley. The ’21’ denotes our central business remit – focusing on the sustainable management of resources. Designed by Cumbrian business Edengraphics, the logo’s central ‘wheel’ theme – comprising multiple uses of the letter ‘e’ – reflects our environmental sustainability values; including recycling, circular economy and renewable energy (hydro and wind power).
